MakerBot Update – One Awesome Spindle Holder

MakerBot Spool Holder

I saw this awesome MakerBot accessory over at Thingiverse and had to make one.  This thing glides nice and smoothly and looks freak'n sweet.  I also managed to find a place in town that I can get roller bearings from for cheap in the process, by the hundreds if needed!  This spindle is headed down to the space for use with our (hopefully) soon to arrive MakerBot.  I made a few minor changes to the design and will probably make a few more when I make one for my personal bot.  One issue I encountered that I hadn't even noticed till I dropped this baby off at the space is the fact that the separation between the two outside plates had grown as I spooled the plastic onto the roll and many of the bridging pieces weren't making contact with the second plate.  I'll have to try and address this problem as well as the  fact that the filament likes to unravel when there's no tension on it in the next one.  Here's some additional pics of the assembly of the bearing clamps if you want to make your own:

MakerBot Update – Plastic Get!

Monday, September 7th, 2009

I've got the laser cut parts for the extruder cut and managed to get my hands on a big spool of black ABS!

Also CCCKC ordered their MakerBot kit so soon we'll have a working MakerBot at the space, with plenty of ABS to keep it busy for quite some time! It'll be nice to have access to a working MakerBot to build idler pulleys and other miscellaneous parts to help get my MakerBot off the ground as well.

So it Begins

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

I’ve been cutting out MakerBot parts for the Hackerspace I belong to because several members would like to see a 3D printer in the space.  Initially I had no interest in making one for myself, primarily because of the limitations of homebrew plastic extrusion 3D printers (no support material, build outs < 45 degrees, goop problems).  But the more I read about the MakerBot and RepRap, the more I wanted to build one, so finally broke down and started construction of my own MakerBot in parallel with the construction of the Hackerspace’s printer.

I’m hoping to overcome MakerBot Industries’ understocking problems by making some slightly modified motor controllers and using some alternative drive components, but for the most part I’m sticking to the design that they’ve laid out for my first foray into 3D printer construction.  I’ve got all the parts I need for the body cut and all the parts I should need from McMaster Carr already, but still need to get the parts for the extruder and drive system cut as well as order all the parts I’ll need from SDP-SI.  SDP-SI seems to be out of a number of needed components as well so I’ll likely end up experimenting a bit with alternative drive system.
