{"id":26,"date":"2009-08-27T13:09:39","date_gmt":"2009-08-27T20:09:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.built-to-spec.com\/blog\/?p=26"},"modified":"2009-08-27T13:09:39","modified_gmt":"2009-08-27T20:09:39","slug":"so-it-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.built-to-spec.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/27\/so-it-begins\/","title":{"rendered":"So it Begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been cutting out MakerBot parts for the <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"CCCKC\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.cowtowncomputercongress.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hackerspace<\/a><\/noindex> I belong to because several members would like to see a 3D printer in the space.\u00a0 Initially I had no interest in making one for myself, primarily because of the limitations of homebrew plastic extrusion 3D printers (no support material, build outs &lt; 45 degrees, goop problems).\u00a0 But the more I read about the MakerBot and RepRap, the more I wanted to build one, so finally broke down and started construction of my own MakerBot in parallel with the construction of the Hackerspace\u2019s printer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_25\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.built-to-spec.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/IMG_0238.JPG\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25 \" title=\"My MakerBot - Stage 1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.built-to-spec.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/IMG_0238-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"PE00001 At the First Stage of Construction\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.built-to-spec.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/IMG_0238-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.built-to-spec.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/IMG_0238-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PE00001 - First Stage of Construction<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019m hoping to overcome MakerBot Industries\u2019 understocking problems by making some slightly modified motor controllers and using some alternative drive components, but for the most part I\u2019m sticking to the design that they\u2019ve laid out for my first foray into 3D printer construction.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got all the parts I need for the body cut and all the parts I should need from McMaster Carr already, but still need to get the parts for the extruder and drive system cut as well as order all the parts I\u2019ll need from SDP-SI.\u00a0 SDP-SI seems to be out of a number of needed components as well so I\u2019ll likely end up experimenting a bit with alternative drive system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been cutting out MakerBot parts for the Hackerspace I belong to because several members would like to see a 3D printer in the space.
